My heart was heavy after I read this article “Countdown to 80% BSN By 2020.” I can’t help but feel that this movement is going to cause more divide than unity! My heart and drive is to unite, encourage, love and support nurses all over. Pushing for this 80% BSN by 2020 includes a lot of pointing fingers at the nurses who stand below that threshold….including myself. I am a proud ADN. I never once have considered myself that, though. I am simply a NURSE.
The Creation of the ADN Program
ADN programs were created during World War II when we needed more nurses to support the War and our soldiers. The last time I checked, we’re still fighting the war of not having enough nurses! I can’t wrap my head around why they would want to get rid of programs that help produce competent and skilled nurses who take the SAME state boards that BSN students take? It just makes no sense to me.
Meeting In The Middle
I feel like there needs to be more benefit and incentive to push a registered nurse to go back to get a degree that essentially qualifies him/her to do the same thing that they were already doing. If you are going to differentiate a BSN from and ADN, I feel they need to take a different state boards and receive a much higher pay raise than 0.50$-1.00$. There is no incentive which creates no desire! That is why so many people push back! No one wants to work hard to receive very little!
Watch my Video!
I’d love for you guys to listen to this video above! It’s not a giant defense…..it’s reasoning and love about a BIG issue for nursing. The bottom line is that we are ALL nurses and we ALL have a place in healthcare. My hope is that this whole proposal and the people behind it would meet in the middle. I will gladly get my bachelors if I can truly see the benefit in it, not just research funded by universities (BSN Programs) telling me I will be a safer and more qualified nurse. I’m all about uniting and beautifying this profession, but if I’m making a sacrifice to go back to school you better make it worth it!
